Why Your Home's Indoor Air Quality is Significant

March 25, 2020

The international growth of COVID-19 has likely shifted your regular calendar upside down.

In uncertain times, you can take comfort in knowing your house is your safe space. You’re probably spending more time there now. As a result, your indoor air quality is now more crucial than ever.

Did you know we can install indoor air quality products in your residence that deliver hospital-grade filtration? These options can clear bacteria from your air, as well as allergens, odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Today’s residences are securely sealed, which is fantastic for energy efficiency. But it also means your indoor air might be worse than the air outside. In actuality, the EPA says it can be two to five times worse than outdoors. This might be problematic, since we spend about 90% of our days indoors.

There are many things that can lead to poor indoor air quality, such as cleaning products and air fresheners. These may result in headaches and irritate allergies and asthma.

There’s a combination of things you can do to enhance your air quality. Some include improved air filters, an air purification system or an ultraviolet (UV) germicidal light.

Unsure which solution is best for your house? Our skilled techs can do an indoor air quality audit. Based off of the results, we can then suggest the ideal option for your home’s distinctive needs.

Air Filtration

When browsing air filters, it’s important to review the MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This gauges how efficiently it filters air.

One of the most average and lowest priced filters, flat fiberglass filters, are graded between 1 and 4 on the MERV scale. Pleated filters are slightly better, rated between 8 and 12.

We recommend upgrading to no less than a MERV 13, for instance, the HC13 Media Air Cleaner, for optimal effect. This filter provides fresher air while reducing energy consumption*.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are regarded as the gold standard in air filtration, since they’re usually installed in hospitals. They’re effective at capturing 99.97–99.99% of indoor pollutants, like pollen, pet dander and smoke.

Air Purification

Lennox® offers some of the greatest air purification units you can get. PureAir™ S and Healthy Climate™ PureAir Air Purification Systems offer hospital-grade filtration while managing all types of indoor air contaminants.

This powerful equipment can take care of:

  • 99.9% of allergens, such as pollen, dust and pet dander
  • 95% of bacteria-sized particles, like ones that cause strep throat
  • 50% of VOCs and odors within 24 hours

UV Germicidal Lights

A UV germicidal light is placed on the inside of your HVAC equipment. Its powerful rays wipe out bacteria and mold within seconds.

If your family suffers from allergies or asthma, this unit can provide relief. Especially if you live in a muggy part of the country where bacteria and mold flourish.

This light also provides an additional bonus for your comfort equipment. It could help it run for a longer period of time and run more efficiently, as it keeps the internal components clean.

Our air quality engineers recommend using one of these lights with an enhanced filter, such as our Carbon Clean 16® Media Air Cleaner, for the best results. This filter offers industry-leading MERV 16 filtration in addition to carbon-coated fibers to catch particles in your house’s air. It does all of this without limiting your HVAC unit’s airflow.

Whole-Home Humidifiers

Getting balanced humidity in your residence might help keep your loved ones healthy in the winter months. It can aid sore throats, flaky skin and peeling lips, amidst further cold weather irritations.

If you aren’t sure of what your residence’s humidity range is, we’ll measure it while we do your indoor air quality audit. While the range fluctuates based on outdoor temperatures, HVAC experts generally recommend keeping it between 40–60 percent.

You can achieve this optimum range by installing a whole-home humidifier. This equipment usually functions with your furnace or air handler to give optimal humidity throughout your residence. Some models, like the Healthy Climate® Whole-Home Power Humidifier, contain an included fan to move humidity while your heating equipment isn’t on.
